Do you love watching free movies on your laptop or Roku device, but you’re overwhelmed with the choices? Read on to see our favorite places!
In the beginning, there was Netflix. Now, there are a ton of places to watch and stream movies for free on your computer, Roku, or Amazon Fire TV stick. We haven’t tried the Amazon Fire TV stick, but we have tried Roku and love it!
If you want to watch movies through your computer or laptop, it’s pretty simple. All you will need to do is go to the website and make your selection.
On Roku, the free places to watch movies are called channels. To add these channels, you will go to your Home page. Scroll down to Streaming Channels and select this by pushing on the right arrow next to OK on your remote.
There are several options here in the left hand colum. You can go to top free and start adding your channels. You can search channels, or you can go to Movies & TV and check out all the channels available. There are a TON of these. It’s amazing how many there are.
To add a channel to your line up on your Home page, you simply click on it and select that option.
Don’t have a Roku device? Click here to see our informational post on this.
Now, onto the free ways to watch movies!
Below you will find our favorite free places to stream movies. We are going to skip the most common places, such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. Pretty much everybody already knows about these websites, and they have been covered extensively. We want to share the channels and websites that aren’t common or well known on this post. If you’d like more information on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime (as well as the other better known places), you can see our other post here.
If you’re on Roku, you will want to utilize the search option under the channels heading to find these channels and add to your line up. If you’re streaming directly from your computer, you can just click on the website link.
The sites below have a ton of movies. Under each heading, we are just listing a few of the titles, so don’t think that is their full catalog of available movies! As of the time of posting, all of these places are FREE.
Popcorn Flix is an awesome site or channel to find popular movies in a wide variety of channels. At the time of this posting, some featured movies are Beowulf, The Legend of Baggar Vance, and Defiance. They are also featuring a lot of shows from Nat Geo Wild. This is one of our favorites, as it’s not filled with only low-budget films or movies from the 70’s.
Crackle is another really great place to find recent free movies to watch. Recent doesn’t mean fresh from the movie theater, but movies that have been released in the past few years. They have a ton of movies too. On this site, if you’re streaming right from the website, our favorite way it to click on the Movies heading at the top of the page, rather than searching from the homepage. If you’re on Roku, you can add the channel. Some titles on there as of today are the Ace Ventura movies, Alien 3, Christine, Buried Alive, and The Cave.
Tubitv is another channel you have to add (or watch online) if you’re a movie fan. Some of their titles as of today are: Dirty Dancing, Brothers, Paranormal Activity, Texas Chainsaw 3D, New York, I Love You, After.Life, and more. You can register on Tubitv to keep tracking of your viewing history, etc, and this is free. We haven’t tried registering yet, but we might if they keep adding these great movies. On the website, it says they get weekly updates from Lionsgate, MGM, Sony, and Starz.
FrightPix is part of Screen Media Ventures. This company basically distributes movies to television, so a lot of these you can watch online or through Roku are movies you would probably end up seeing on cable at some point. All of the genres here are centered on horror. Some titles here are: The Collector, Backwoods, Psycho Shark, Hayride, George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead, P2, and Howling III.
This channel might be Roku specific, as we are not finding a website for it. It’s a channel that is on our line up, but we haven’t watched a lot of. There are some movies on here with well-known actors and actresses, but these movies are not necessarily a household name. Some of the titles are: Devil in the Flesh with Rose McGowan, The Stream with Mario Lopez, and Suddenly with Ray Liotta.
Pluto is a channel we’ve just recently started checking out on Roku. From their website, it appears you can stream this to multiple devices, including your computer.
Pluto is something a little different. The way it displays really reminds me of the Dish Network guide, and this is actually something that we liked! With Pluto, they have 75+ live channels, including Crime Network, Fight, Tastemade, News24/7, NBC News, The Weather Network, Cheddar, Fear Factor, The Onion, Hive, Fight, and so many more. Again, all of this is free. You can scroll through by time and see what all is playing.
FilmRise is a great place to find the hard-to-find/unique movies and television shows you want to watch. For example, how many of you were fans of the original Unsolved Mysteries television show with Robert Stack? Until now, the only place to stream this was through Amazon Prime. FilmRise offers Unsolved Mysteries (Season 1) on their line up, as well as The Slaughter Rule, Forensic Files, Lords of the Street, Ghosts Never Sleep, Pictures of Baby Jane Doe, My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend, Biggie & Tupac, Heavens Fall, and a lot more. Check this place out for movies that aren’t found on all the other places.
This is a Roku channel only. I couldn’t find it online. This channel is strictly the classics, including westerns. There are even some black and white movies to be found here in their line up. Some of their titles include: Lost, Lonely, and Vicious, Special Agent with George Reeves, The Secret of Dr. Kildare with Lionel Barrymore, Killers From Space, Salome, and King Solomon’s Mines with Deborah Kerr.
Free Grindhouse Flix Tonight
This is another Roku channel. We couldn’t find a website for this to stream from online, so it appears you’ll need the Roku device. This channel has a lot of B horror movies, as well as retro horror films. You will find all types of horror here, from comedy type horror to really adult. There are a handful of movies that are recently released. I’ve seen some of the movies here also available on Amazon Prime and Netflix. A few of the listed titles are: House of Purgatory, The House on Pine Street, Trace, The Chosen, The Prophet’s Game, and Eyes of the Woods.
Ovguide has a ton of past releases with actors and actresses that are household names. Some movies that are currently listed are: Halloween with Jamie Lee Curtis, The Woman in the Fifth with Ethan Hawke and Kristin Scott Thomas, The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond with Bryce Dallas Howard, and Brotherhood of Justice with Keanu Reeves and Kiefer Sutherland. All genres.
ThrillerTheatre is another Roku-only channel. This channel will really “thrill” fans of this genre. There are a ton of thrillers here. Some of the titles include: All Things To All Men with Gabriel Byrne and Rufus Sewell, Rear Window with Christopher Reeve and Daryl Hannah, Dirty Deeds with John Goodman and Sam Neill, and Thorne: Scaredy Cat with David Morrisey and Sandra Oh.
Roku only! Sometimes I enjoy watching Documentaries. If you do too, you’ll love this channel. There are a ton here on all kinds of different topics.
Here you will find several genres, from horror to drama. There is not a listing for romance, but there are westerns here. This place has a love of B movies, as well as older releases (from the vault). Some titles here are: Nomads, John Carpenter Presents: Body Bags, Godzilla, Route 66, and The Saint. Expect to see a lot of martial arts, science fiction, and action/adventure movies here.
