M/M Contemporary Romance

jesses smile

Jesse Peterson is 26 and loves his job at a pet store. He loves the cats, the dogs and Sniffles the rabbit. What he doesn’t love is the way people assume that he can’t look after himself, that he’s isn’t a man. So, when the store’s newest customer, buying supplies for his kitten, asks him out, Jesse has trouble understanding why. Jesse knows he’s not stupid, but nobody else seems to know that. They just see a good-looking young man whose smile seems to be the brightest thing about him.

Drew Oliver isn’t other people. A high school teacher with a history of bad relationship choices, Drew is patient, loving, and doesn’t care that Jesse is different. He just cares about being able to make him smile as often as he can.

Everyone seems to have an opinion about the differences between Drew and Jesse, few notice the things they share. Can their relationship survive the scrutiny and judgement passed by everyone around them? And when one of Drew’s bad choices shows up, will love be enough to help them survive the aftermath?

“It’s more than a bit OCD,” Jesse starts to protest but stops when Drew snorts. His glasses are back in place. Jesse thinks he’s the handsomest man he’s ever seen and that’s strange because his Dad wears glasses for reading and he’s not handsome. Maybe his mom thinks he is.

“Dude, you have never seen my mother with housework, trust me you have a long way to go.” Drew crunches on a cracker he’s smeared with blue cheese. “Jesse, you know, you’re not broken, you’re just different. And I’d still like to take you out tomorrow night.”

Sighing, Jesse sits back in his chair for a moment, unsure of what to do. Part of him wants to run home, lock the door behind him, grab Wicket, and rub his hand over him until his heart stops pounding. Part of him wants to go out tomorrow night and see what happens. And an entirely different part of him wants to climb in Drew’s lap and kiss him again. He decides he should probably ignore that part. For now.

“Okay, what are we going to see?”

Author Interview:

Thanks for doing an interview! Could you tell our readers a little bit about your writing journey?

When I was 12 I read my first Stephen King novel (yeah I was precocious) and heard Bruce Springsteen on the radio and I was just enchanted by the way they painted pictures with their words. It was magic and I knew I wanted to do that. I started out as a journalist and worked my way up to editor. I then spent some time doing corporate writing (something I was very bad at) before deciding to return to university. I graduated in 2017 with a BA in Media Studies and English and am currently preparing my Masters thesis in Media Studies. My ‘day job’ (my thesis) involves analysing and writing about M/M fan fiction and my ‘other’ job is writing M/M romance – it’s a win all the way around.

How many books do you currently have published?

I have just published my first novel, but I do have a collection of columns I wrote for a newspaper and a collection of four short stories. I put them on Amazon a few years ago – before all the amazing tools we have today were so easy to access – so the formatting on them isn’t … wonderful. One day soon I’ll take them down and fix them.

I have some more novels due out over the coming months.

What has been your favorite book to write so far? Why?

I’ve written four novels over the past twelve months and Jesse’s Smile has been my favorite. I just liked Jesse’s character from the moment I heard him in my head so it made it very easy to sit down and work each day. When I was finished I went into mourning for a week, I missed him so much.

Are you currently working on a book? Will this be your next release?

I am currently working on two books. One is the third in a trilogy – The Capistrano Series – the first of which will be released in May. The other – Guard You With My Heart is the first in a paranormal m/m romance series – Guardian Angel series – will be my next release.

What do you enjoy most about writing?

Painting pictures with words. Meeting characters in my head (it’s noisy in there), discovering their world, and telling their story.

Do you ever get writer’s block? If so, how do you deal with it?

I do. It used to bother me a lot but now I deal with it by putting on some music, opening a document about something entirely different, and ignoring the characters and plot that are blocked. Usually within 24 hours they start opening up again. I don’t know if that would work for everyone, but it works for me.

Have you ever had one of your characters to take a twist you weren’t expecting and surprise you?

Yes. In The Capistrano Series, one of the characters has just thrown a massive temper tantrum. He’s normally really placid and easy going and it blindsided me – so it certainly blind sided the other characters.

Which of your characters is your personal favorite? Least favorite? Why?

I have favorites and villians in each book. In Jesse’s Smile, Jesse was my favorite by far because I liked his transparency and his lack of pretense. I really hated David – hated writing him, hated everything about him. Happily so do readers. He’s the villain of the story and he was just so awful to have in my head.

Now it’s time to get to know you! What are some of your favorite books to read?

I’m a huge fan of Stephen King, JK Rowling, Melissa Foster, oh look the list is huge and very ecclectic. I read a lot of fan fiction too.

What about television shows? Movies?

Supernatural. BBC Sherlock. Arrow. The Black List. NCIS.

Movies – pretty much any movie available. I’m going to see The Shape of Water today.

Can readers find you at any live events, such as book signings or conventions?

I’m hoping to have some of those lined up very soon so stay tuned.

When we arrived at the penthouse, Alexander immediately went to the living room, grabbed a bottle of whiskey from the wet bar, and poured some into a lowball glass. No ice. Two fingers, not one. He threw back the amber liquid and poured another. I frowned. Alexander always exercised control when he drank. This was way out of the norm.
He braced his arms on the edges of the wet bar and dropped his head to his chest. His back was to me, but I could tell he was taking a few deep breaths.
“Alex?” I questioned cautiously.
“What?” he snapped, but didn’t turn around.
“What’s wrong? You never drink that fast.”
He picked up the glass that held his second round, stared at it for a moment, before tipping back the contents.
“Every man has his poison of choice. Today, mine’s whiskey,” he stated bitterly.
Alarmed, I moved toward him slowly, like he was a wild animal that could be spooked at any moment. Slipping my arms around his waist, I moved my hands up to feel the slow and steady rhythm of his heart. We stayed like that for a long moment before he eventually seemed to calm. Turning towards me, he wrapped his arms tightly around my back and cocooned me to his chest.
“I’m okay, angel. I just needed a minute.”
I nuzzled my head into his shoulder as he stroked the length of my hair. I felt as though my heart might burst.
“Let me take your pain away.” I lifted my head up to meet his gaze. Torment swirled within his pools of sapphire, so I offered the only thing I could to erase it. “Be with me.”
He took my chin between his fingers and brushed his lips softly over mine.
“I want that,” he murmured and ran a hand down my arms in quiet tenderness. A familiar warmth spread through me and I tipped my head further back, my silent plea for him to deepen his kiss.
Pushing my tongue past his lips, I explored the depths of his mouth, tangling my tongue with his. He matched my intensity, pulling my body tighter to his.
“Take me to bed, Alex.”
His grip on me slackened, creating an unwanted space between us. I ached for him to return.
“I’m wound too tight, angel. I don’t think…” he trailed off, seeming unable to find the words to express his thoughts. He began to turn away, but I placed a hand on his arm to stop him. I didn’t understand his hesitation, but I didn’t need to.
“I want you. In this moment, nothing else matters.”

About the Author:

Dakota Willink is a contemporary romance writer and editor, and the author of The Stone Series. She is an associate member of Romance Writers of America and a two time Readers’ Favorite International Book Awards winner.

Dakota has always had a passion for reading and writing. From the time she was an adolescent, she enjoyed curling up with a good paperback, reading genres that ranged from thriller and fantasy, to mystery and romance. She always dreamed of one day writing her own book, but had put her aspirations on hold to focus on her family and a career that would pay the bills. However, her heart continued to be with fictional characters – whether they belonged to a favorite author or if they were just stories that she made up in her own head.

In 2013, Dakota gathered enough courage to turn her dreams into a reality. In between playing chauffeur to two very busy children and working her job during the day, Dakota began to put words on paper. Eventually, she began to describe her life as a book. Everything she saw or heard throughout the day, intertwined with her imagination for the creation of future writings. By 2014, with the support of her husband and two children, she gave up the security of a steady paycheck and began working on her first novel full time.

Her first novel, Heart of Stone, was published in December of 2015. Less than a year after its release, the Readers’ Favorite International Book Awards recognized Heart of Stone as the 2016 Bronze Medalist in the romance category. In September of 2017, Readers’ Favorite announced Stepping Stone as the Gold Medal winner in the Contemporary Romance category.

Dakota resides in the Western New York area, where she enjoys spending time with family, her two Labrador Retrievers, and her spoiled rotten cat. During the summer months, she can often be found soaking up the sun on the Great Lakes with her family.

I try to change my face, opting for more of a dead-eye look, one that I see in most of the other patients on this floor. His stare is burning through me. He sees more than I want him too. I know now that his role in this hospital is much more than just the attending doctor for this floor.

“No need, I can take over for you.” He moves toward my bed.

“I’m finished. She’s all calm now.”

“No, this little busybody needs some time to think.”

His sneer, peeling off his normally soft disposition, his true sinister self peeks through behind his yellow eyes. I reach for Yolanda’s scrubs. She pulls away and shakes her head in a soft side to side motion. Her warning is heard loud and clear. She stands to face Him. She says nothing of his change, but I know she knows.

Yolanda stands at the door, her lips moving at a feverish pace with no sound. Dr. Antosh stands over me pointing for me to lay back. He pulls a set of restraints from his jacket pocket, attaching them to the link on the underside of my cot. He pulls the padded cuffs up around the sides of my bed, placing each of my wrists and ankles inside. Yolanda’s hands are clenched in fists at her side, her lips still moving. He pulls a small syringe from his pocket, flips it needle up and thumps it. He slides the waistband of my pants below my hip and injects the serum into me.  Her silence at the door, an ominous pretense, as He stands and walks toward the door. It shuts and locks.

Yolanda’s face is in the window. She mouthes the words be strong before she disappears from view.

There’s still enough light in my room from the high windows on the wall above me. With the entire floor on lock down, there’s no noise from the halls. I see the occasional random nurse’s face in my window. But, I’m left shackled to my bed with no human contact. My eyes are becoming heavy. My vision blurs.

I count the cinder blocks of the walls. I hum Mom’s lullaby. Anything to keep my consciousness, focusing on anything at all. I recount my last interaction with Marco. I wish I would’ve kissed him on the beach that day.  I feel the medicine setting in as the room grows darker. I try to think of the happy things as I lose the light. I think about Marco’s eyes. About his lips that night on the pier. The words he said to me, to kiss you is like seeing stars. I see him in an ethereal form, floating above me. The medicine is winning the fight.

Author Interview:

Thanks for doing an interview! Could you tell our readers a little bit about your writing journey?

I’d love too. Well, I started just trying to pass the time, when my oldest children were infants. There was a lot of down time in the evenings. So, I wrote. Overtime, I began more confident in my abilities, letting family and friends read my stories. Fast-forward about 10 years and here we are!

How many books do you currently have published?

I have a total of 5 books published. Four of them are in my Wine Tasting Series: Sweet Summer Wine, Simply Bittersweet, Early Harvest, and Liquid Cashmere. It’s a fast-paced, fast read Erotica series. And now Devastated.

What has been your favorite book to write so far? Why?

Definitely Devastated. I have lived and breathed this story for nearly two years. I have a compulsive editing tick. :) So, while the story did not take that long to write, but my constant second guessing and editing did! hahahaha

Are you currently working on a book? Will this be your next release?

Devastated, Book 1 of the Slaughtered Souls Series releases on January 17th, 2018. My current works  in progress are The Journal of Emory Tate and Desolated, Book 2 of the Slaughtered Souls Series.

What do you enjoy most about writing?

The escape! Just the same as reading, I emerge myself in the world that I’m writing! I meet new people, travel to new places… It’s like a mini vacation in my mind!

Do you ever get writer’s block? If so, how do you deal with it?

I absolutely get writer’s block! That’s actually how my Wine Tasting Series was born. I was working on Devastated and got stuck. I put it down and opened a brand new document. After a couple weeks, I had Sweet Summer Wine, Book 1.

Have you ever had one of your characters to take a twist you weren’t expecting and surprise you?

That’s the fun part! In the beginning, I let my OCD run things. I was meticulous. I planned every step the characters would make. Let me tell you, this led to flat characters and a boring story line. So I quit. I don’t plan and I don’t outline. I let the characters tell me when they want to go.

Which of your characters is your personal favorite? Least favorite? Why?

My favorite is Violetta! She’s a purple-haired, French vixen. You’ll get to meet her in The Journal of Emory Tate. She’s sexy! She’s subtly powerful! And can take a man to his knees with a simple look!

Least favorite? Hmmm, I guess that would have to have been Amber, the stepmother, in the Wine Tasting Series… she took on the traits of someone I would never want to personally know.

So far, what has been your favorite scene to write?

Oooooooo… that’s a good one! Definitely the elevator scene in Devastated. I actually creeped myself out in that one.

What lessons have you learned since becoming a writer? Do you have any tips for new writers?

Do not expect your first book to be amazing! I wrote multiple stories before I ever began publishing and I still have a lot to learn. As for tips, find yourself another author (published or Indie) that you love. Read their work, follow them on social media. You’d be surprised at how many authors will take time out of their schedules to mentor you! I have one that mentors me!

If you were to recommend your books to a stranger, which book would you advise them to start with? Why?

Devastated, hands down! This is by far, my favorite story I’ve ever written.

Do you have any extras you’d like to share, like a teaser about an upcoming new release,  a summary of a deleted scene, or a teaser about a surprising plot twist or character?

How about a tiny blurb of The Journal of Emory Tate? It will belong to the Atrocious Enterprise series I have planned! Are you up for a little dominant delicious-ness? Emory Tate is arrogant, cocky, and dominant. He knows what he wants, and he’ll do what he needs to get it. His fetishes control him, landing him in the company of a Therapist. While he follows her directions for him to keep a journal, this isn’t exactly what she had in mind. Join Emory through his musings as he transforms himself and the lives around him, not always for the better.

Now it’s time to get to know you! What are some of your favorite books to read?

My guilty pleasure are Vampires and Werewolves…although I have not written them, yet! Maybe in the future… who knows?

What about television shows? Movies?

I rarely watch television, but when I do, it’s reality television. I love the Little Women shows, Dance Moms, Bring It…

Is there a book that you have read that you feel has made a big impact on your life? Why?

The Hobbit and Trainspotting! I hated reading when I was younger. My English teacher would assign book report after book report. I would barely skate by with mediocre understandings of the books. Finally, me teacher pointed me in the direction of both of those books! They changed the way I looked at reading forever.

What is a single life worth? In our modern world, where wars are on the cusp of igniting at a moment’s notice, new diseases ravage entire populations, and hidden atrocities erase the lives of thousands, what can the death of a single person mean?

It can mean the tenuous line between peace and destruction.

Kurt Ramis knows this, as he watches the aftermath of an assassination on his television set. His years in the CIA have prepared him for such a dreadful day.

“Rasul” knows this, as he follows his young guide down the streets of New York City, with a gift for his adopted country.

The soldiers and sentries of Camelot’s Corridor, deep under the sands of Texas know this, as they prepare the secret bunker for the President’s arrival.

Mike Keogh knows this, as he remembers fallen friends, betrayals, and mention of a secretive monster named the Tangerine Demon.

Jessie Rosen will know it soon enough, as she descends the steps to Kubrá, to meet her deliverer. Her new family descends those steps as well, calling for their Lord to hear their prayers.

Phil Barr begrudgingly knows this, as he cowers in his palatial Hollywood Hills mansion, murderers and thugs auditioning on live TV, sirens ringing in his ears. This wasn’t how his charmed life was supposed to turn out.

And DaRWIn knows this best of all, as it predicted the assassination, and the calamitous after-effects some time ago.

On a certain day, on a certain street in the Middle East, the taking of a single life will mean everything, and it will shake the foundation of humanity. It will be the pulling of a loose strand in mankind’s tapestry, undoing the progress of a thousand years, ripping apart at the seams countless lives, countless societies.

Intertwining lives and stories, some saved and some ended, some Going, some Gone…

In order to allow for new growth, the old must often be felled, burned away to the ashes. This is as true of forests as it is the constructs of men.

And as a single thunderous current can engulf an ancient forest in flame, a solitary strike of violence can erase the oldest of men’s foundations.

On this day, such a strike of violence unfolded almost perfectly.

It began with a group of vehicles methodically making its way from the outskirts of the capital, through the dust-covered streets, and emerging into the open space of the ancient city square.  This motorcade moved in precise unison, seeming like a scarab beetle crossing a desert hardpan.

The lead pair of motorcycles, traveling side-by-side, came to a stop just past the main entrance to the embassy.  Following closely behind was an out-of-place black limousine, somewhat dusted over, yet shining brilliantly in the midday sun, which was itself followed by a pair of aging military transport trucks.  The head and abdomen of this insectile formation were bristling with weapons; the ‘cycles had RPGs mounted across the handlebars for easy access to the driver, and rear-facing second riders, conspicuously armed with AK-47s; the trucks, each carrying a dozen armed men in their canvas-covered beds.

After a moment’s pause, the doors to the elongated thorax opened almost simultaneously.  Several brutish men, whose demeanor and air could only be those of guardians, emerged into the hot Arabian day.  Seconds later a small man of indistinct features was helped out of the rear of the limousine.  He then began a slow but purposeful walk up the stairs toward the entrance.

The motorcade had already begun moving away, into the crowded street, when the first flashbang went off to the right of the embassy’s entrance.  This non-lethal grenade, usually used in close quarters to confuse an opponent and render them momentarily vulnerable, nonetheless produced the desired effect out in the open.  The trained guardians were instantly put on the defensive, and surrounded the Prime Minister.  They began moving him away from the embassy and toward street in an attempt to regroup with the motorcade.

The motorcade itself had already made its way halfway down the block when it too reacted to the explosion.  The driver of the Minister’s limousine stopped and attempted to reverse course, but the sudden onslaught of frightened citizens enveloped the vehicle, rendering it temporarily immobile.  The men and women attempting to flee the explosion likewise impeded the men in the back of the truck and the motorcycle drivers.

One of those fleeing men, dressed in a flowing but crudely made thawb, made his way behind an abandoned food cart, and calmly observed the security detail’s next move from this hidden vantage point.

Author Interview:

Thanks for doing an interview! Could you tell our readers a little bit about your writing journey? I was a voracious reader as a kid, mostly because of my step-father’s influence, and I think that because English is my second language, reading helped me to learn structure and vocabulary early on.  That said, although I always dreamt of someday being a writer, I didn’t seriously consider publishing anything publicly until a few years ago.  I had a few ideas for some short stories, and after publishing a couple of them on their own, the bigger idea of publishing an anthology of short stories got me going on my present path.

How many books do you currently have published?  Aside from two short stories that I published in 2013, this upcoming anthology, “Going Gone”, is my first big work to be published.

What has been your favorite book to write so far? Why?  “Going Gone” is definitely my favorite because of the diversity of story-telling involved and the way the stories intertwine around a central theme.

Are you currently working on a book? Will this be your next release?  I have two novels in mind as future projects, though the success of this anthology will determine how quickly they get written and published.  I’m currently working full-time as a computer programmer, and the anthology I wrote on my spare time, on and off, for about three years.  If I can manage to write full-time I should be able to knock at least one of the novels out in about a year’s time.

What do you enjoy most about writing? The creative process.  Specifically inventing a character or situation that didn’t previously exist, and then finding a way for your characters to progress beyond that situation.

Do you ever get writer’s block? If so, how do you deal with it?  I don’t think I’ve written for a substantial enough time to get writer’s block.  I only say that because the ideas for everything I’ve written so far have come to me fairly easily, it’s just the actual writing (and the time to do it) that have been the most difficult part.

Have you ever had one of your characters to take a twist you weren’t expecting and surprise you? Yes, probably every significant character in my anthology have turned out different than I originally intended them to.  There is one protagonist that I began writing as a man, then realized that that was wrong, and that she needed to be a woman.  Coincidently, hers is one of my favorite stories in the anthology.

Which of your characters is your personal favorite? Least favorite? Why?  I’d have to say my favorite is Jessie Rosen (alluded to above), the investigative journalist in my short story “Jessie and the LARGOnauts” because she finds herself in a dangerous situation and her strength and inner resolve really shows throughout the narrative.  My least favorite, but funnest to write, is Symon Stephenson.  He’s a rock star, and a walking ego, and doesn’t really care about anyone but himself, and it was fun to have him interact with people who couldn’t stand him but needed to work with him.

What lessons have you learned since becoming a writer? Do you have any tips for new writers? I’ve learned to not give up, to keep writing even when you don’t feel like it.  Some days you’re tired and your brain is fried, but it’s a privilege to be able to write your thoughts down so that you can go back and mold them into something better later.  You can’t take that for granted, and I learned that I love the editing process because it allows me the freedom to overwrite ideas that I thought were done and (hopefully) make them more complete through the edit.

If you were to recommend your books to a stranger, which book would you advise them to start with? Why?  “The Man” which is a short story I wrote a few years ago.  It’s free, for one, and it encapsulates, I think, my writing style and technique.  If it intrigues you, buy my anthology, why not?  If not, at least it didn’t cost you anything!

Now it’s time to get to know you! What are some of your favorite books to read?  “One Hundred Years of Solitude”, “The Road”, “No Country for Old Men”, “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love.”  These are the books that impacted me most, and made me want to become a writer.

If you had to sum up your life as a writer in ten words, what would you say? It’s still a work in progress!

Do you have anything else you’d like to share with readers? Yes, I hope you enjoy my work and don’t be afraid to leave me a review or recommend my book to friend!  Thanks a million!

Release Date: 1/16/2018

Will she risk the fall and take a leap of faith?

Vivi Lewis just wants to stay in one place for more than a minute. It’s April of her senior year, for crying out loud, and here she is again, packed into a beat-up white Toyota with her anxiety-ridden single mom, fleeing the Washington coast. She hopes that this move—the one that’s taken them inland to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho—will finally be their true fresh start.

There’s little to indicate this time will be much different from all the others…until Vivi meets Win Kemper at the city bus stop before her first day of school. Win and Vivi are a perfect match—both self-defined weirdos. Vivi trusts Win, and their time together is a whirlwind of cliff-jumping and paddleboarding, a life immersed in nature that would have given her, and especially her mom, a panic attack in the past. Their instant spark becomes a rock-solid friendship, and might be even more, if Vivi can stick around long enough to experience it.

But having a reason to stay also raises the stakes. Running from their fears has never made Vivi and her mom safe enough before, and now everything she has to lose appears in sharp relief. Can she find the strength to separate herself from her mother? Will the burgeoning bond she and Win share be enough to get them beyond the last twenty-six days of senior year—even when the worst-case scenario comes to pass?

Win looks at me. “Did something bad happen to you all when you were in Washington?”

Win hasn’t really pried or pushed for more on my long story. It’s fair that he’s asking, I think.

I consider it, but I can feel the heat already spreading up my neck, just thinking about telling him more. “Code word palindrome, but I will say this: my mom’s running from something.”

Win looks out at the lake, and when he speaks his voice is low and resolute. “I wish you’d been safe from whatever it was.”

I consider this. “But if we’d been safe there, I wouldn’t be here. So…” I leave the sentence in the air.

He smiles and touches the inside of my palm. “And whose names would we be graffiti-ing all over the place? Our careers as defacers of property—”

“And persons,” I remind him, since I’ve traced his name in Sharpie on the palm of my hand, after all.

“Yeah, our careers would be cut short, underdeveloped by serendipity or whatever.” He stands there for a moment, then touches my hand again. “That kiss…”

I worry. It fit perfect out there in the water. Maybe talking about it here, maybe it doesn’t fit. Is that what he’s going to say? “Yeah?”

He looks down at the ground for a second and then up at me through a fringe of bangs. His face is tan, his mouth soft, his dark eyes wide and earnest. “I liked it. I don’t want to rush you, but we fit. We know that, and I want more of that.”

All the air goes out of my lungs. “We’re going to have to get to know each other in condensed form. We don’t have much time.”

“We can spend every waking moment together as soon as school’s out.”

“Until you go away to college,” I say, and I can hear a tiny tremble in the sentence.

He shakes a finger at me. “Don’t get to the end before we even have our beginning.” He comes closer and weaves his fingers in between mine. “You can’t live life like that.”

My phone vibrates again, and I remember my real life, which will be lying in wait when I make it back to my house.

About the Author:

beck anderson

Beck Anderson loves to write about love and its power to heal and grow people past their many imperfections. She is a firm believer in the phrase “mistakes are for learning” and uses it frequently to guide her in writing life and real life.

For Beck, the path to published novelist has taken lots of twists and turns, including a degree in anthropology, a stint as a ticket seller at a ski resort, a much-loved career as a high school English teacher, and a long tenure as a member of the best writing group ever, hands down.

Beck balances (clumsily at best) writing novels and screenplays, working full-time as an educator, mothering two boys, loving her husband, and making time to walk the foothills of Boise, Idaho, with Stefano DiMera Delfino Anderson, the suavest Chihuahua north of the border.

Author Interview:

Thanks for doing an interview! Could you tell our readers a little bit about your writing journey?

I started writing seriously in 2009 after procrastinating for most of my life. My first novel, Fix You, was a Romance Writers of America Rita © finalist for Best First Book and Best Contemporary Romance. It got picked up from Omnific Publishing and re-released by Simon and Schuster. That encouraged me to keep writing. So far my journey has been a lot of persistence and hard work (and avoidance of hard work — still a terrible procrastinator) punctuated by a series of surprises.

How many books do you currently have published?

Worst Case is my 5th novel.

What has been your favorite book to write so far? Why?

Each one has its own personality, like siblings. Use Somebody was a lot of fun, but was really hard to start. The Jeweler was my first novel I wrote, but not the first I published. Fix You was the one that scared me the most because it was the first time I put myself out there.

Have you ever had one of your characters to take a twist you weren’t expecting and surprise you?

I didn’t expect to like Jeremy and Macy, the main characters in Use Somebody, as much as I did, because they’ve made big mistakes in the past. They grew on me. And Jack McCann in Worst Case is a terrible scene hog, but he is a blast to write. Every hero in my books, and Win in Worst Case is no exception, is a person I wish I could meet in real life, but each of them is real enough that I think you could meet someone like him in real life.

What lessons have you learned since becoming a writer? Do you have any tips for new writers?

Not everyone will like your story. There is a wonderful Dita Von Teese quote– “You can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world, and there’s still going to be somebody who hates peaches.” That is really great advice to remember, especially if you are used to pleasing lots of people. Writers can’t please everyone.

Now it’s time to get to know you! What are some of your favorite books to read?

I loved Big Little Lies and Where’d You Go, Bernadette? . I am reading and loving A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue, and I read and loved A Darker Shade of Magic.

What about television shows? Movies?

I loved Kingsman and Guardians of the Galaxy but didn’t love either sequel as much. I kind of love Madam Secretary but if you get a chance to watch the West Wing on Netflix it’s the real deal. Also I love Doctor Who and the Great British Bake Off more than one person should.

Is there a book that you have read that you feel has made a big impact on your life? Why?

All of the books I read from the ages of around ten to seventeen made huge impacts on me. I can remember crying my eyes out over Watership Down and being obsessed with The Dark is Rising series.

Do you have anything else you’d like to share with readers?

Thank you for supporting writers! I hope that reading brings you as much happiness as writing makes me miserable (mostly kidding). But seriously, passionate readers are lifeblood for writers — you keep us going when the going is very, very tough. :)
